Rights Activist Mahrang Baloch Given Life Sentence Over 2024 Rally Death

Mahrang Baloch, an active human rights activist and member of Balochistan Unity Committee (BYC), has been given the sentence of life imprisonment by an anti-terrorism court of Pakistan in relation to the death of a paramilitary soldier in 2024 at a rally held in Gwadar. The prosecution claims that Mahrang Baloch, along with another activist Sibghatullah, had motivated the crowd who brutally killed the soldier, which claim both the activists have denied. The activists and their lawyers did not participate in the hearing which was termed by many human rights organizations including Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan as biased mockery of justice which lacks due process of law. She is internationally known as a campaigner against enforced disappearance after her father’s murder and torture, and she claims that her organization has nothing to do with any militant activities, but the government of Balochistan claims the conviction to be based on undeniable evidence.
